Welcome to the November newsletter from Computer Techs!
As the holidays approach and our inboxes fill up with sales and shipping confirmations, scammers are working harder than ever to trick you. Since much of our digital life from shopping to communication now revolves around our email, we’re dedicating this month’s newsletter to keeping your primary online gateway safe and running smoothly. The goal is simple: to help you recognize a threat and know the best way to handle it when your email isn't working as it should.
Our first blog post, "Beware: The Latest Tech Scams You Need to Know About," is a direct warning about the new threats we're seeing, particularly fake invitations that install dangerous software and fake invoice scams supposedly from companies like McAfee or Geek Squad. These scams rely on you reacting quickly and clicking a bad link or calling a bogus number. However, what if a legitimate email is delayed or you suspect your account has been compromised?
That’s where our second post, "Using Webmail for Reliable Email Troubleshooting," provides the essential guidance. It explains that the best way to check if an email issue is real (or if your account is hijacked) is to bypass your local email app
and log directly into your email provider's website, or "webmail," which acts as the source of truth for your account. Both articles teach one critical lesson: always go to the source, whether it's to verify a sender's true URL or to check your email status directly on the web.
